ABSTRACT

The teratogenic and histopathological effects of diazepam were studied in thirty pregnant female white rats. Diazepam 1 mg was injected intraperitoneally for 9 days starting from the eleventh day from the onset of pregnancy. Histopathological changes in mothers were evidenced by mild congestion of the liver, medullary congestion of the kidney and alopecia. Teratogenicity was evidenced by abortion [2 percent] palate, [10 percent] in living embryoes, corneal adhesiens to the lens [10 percent], congestion and degenerative changes in the parenchymatous organs. Diazepam "valium" is not recommended in pregnant mothers pending further studies
